WP2 is divided into three actions: "Study of the territory of Malta and Gozo", "Study of the territory of Linosa" and "Study of the territory of Pantelleria"
Planned activities: studies of the land and construction of a Geographic Information System (GIS)
that allows the identification of areas susceptible to the risk of erosion The GIS will contain
information relating to soil and climate variability in these areas, the availability of natural water
resources as well as the characteristics of the vegetation (rootstock, variety, type of farming). It will, moreover, provide the definition of anti-erosion measures to be implemented in these land with the aim of enhancing the role of traditional works, such as terracing and identification of interventions using innovative engineering techniques for the consolidation of the slopes.
Expected results: localize the areas suffering of erosive risks and abandonment, where planting grape varieties.

WP3 - “optimization of the vineyard planting” (20.04.2011 - 04.19.2013)

WP3 is divided into three sub actions "qualitative improvement of the Maltese grape varieties",
"Identification of international varieties useful to the territory of Malta and Gozo" and "Study of the
cultivation of Zibibbo in Gozo, Pantelleria and Linosa"
Planned activities: Study in Malta and Gozo about the status of native grapes and international
varieties best suited to provide the best quality results, at the specific soil and climate. Study on the islands of Gozo, Pantelleria and Linosa and the best conditions for growing the variety Zibibbo. Identification of agronomic practices with particular reference to the management of the foliage and the definition of hydraulic-agricultural interventions aimed at increasing and improving use of natural water resources. Technical details of the analysis will be conducted at the IRVOS’s laboratories in Marsala until the Maltese test center will be activated. Definition of guidelines for sustainable management of the vineyard.
Expected results: Definition of the best modalities to plant and manage the native Maltese grape
varieties; Identification of international grape varieties able to grow in the Maltese territory; Definition of the best modalities to plant and manage the Zibibbo grape variety in the islands of Gozo, Pantelleria and Linosa. Draw up of a manual for the vine management

WP4 - Wines valorization (08.15.2011 - 04.19.2013)

The WP4 is divided into four sub-actions: "Study of the production of high quality wines derived from native Maltese grapes varieties", "Study of the production of high quality wines derived from
international varieties grown in Malta and Gozo", 2Production of The Zibibbo of Linosa” and
"Improvement of product yields in Pantelleria"
Planned activities: experimental evidence for the production of high quality and high value-added
products derived from indigenous and international varieties grown in Malta and Gozo; experimental evidence for the production of high quality and high value-added products derived from the Zibibbo grown in Linosa and Pantelleria; chemical, microbiological and organoleptic analysis able to identify the best oenological winemaking systems. Technical details of the analysis will be conducted at the IRVOS’s laboratories in Marsala until the Maltese test center will be activated, as well as in private wineries.
Expected results: Definition of oenological protocols able to obtain high value-added products
derived from Maltese native and international grape varieties as well as from Zibibbo grape variety.

WP5 - Maltese experimental station (20.04.2011 - 31.08.2012)

The WP5 is divided into two sub-actions: “Restoring and equipping of the station” and “Training of
maltese technicians”
Planned activities: restoration of the building owned by the Maltese Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs and located in Buskett (Malta), to make a research station able to perform all studies on Maltese territory beyond the end of the project. Purchase and commissioning of equipment. Training of technical personnel who will work in that center, through the transfer of IRVOS’s skills.
Expected results: Opening of a research center in Malta and improvement ot the technical skills of
the Maltese partners

WP6 – Information and communication (04.20.2011 - 19.04.2013)

WP6 is divided into six sub activities, “Presentation of the project”, “Dissemination of project results in the island of Linosa island”, “Dissemination of project results in the island of Pantelleria”,
“Dissemination of project results in the island of Malta”, “Coordination of communication activities”, “Final seminar”.
Planned activities: organization of a seminar at Trapani to present the project to the sicilian and
maltese stakeholders and to the press; organization of the final seminar of the project in Malta, to
present project results to the sicilian and maltese stakeholders and to the press.
