Il The Project

The project proposes the cultivation of the vine and the value of its derivatives as a remuneration system for protecting land from erosion. The planned activities were divided into six work packages, which respond to specific aims of the project.
The work package 1 “management and coordination”, involves all partners and will ensure proper project management and coordination of technical and administrative activities by , by establishing a steering committee.
The work package 2 “study of land”, involves the participation of several partners (IRVOS, CSEI, City of Lampedusa and Linosa, City of Pantelleria, University of Malta). The specific objective is the identification of risk areas where promote the planting of the vineyards, according to the best crop choices.
The work package 3, “optimization of the vineyard planting”, involves IRVOS, CSEI, University of Malta, Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs of Malta and of Agriculture and Maltese Producers Organization). The research and experimentation programs will allow the identification of the best varieties and optimum growing conditions, according with the rationalization of water resources. The agricultural studies will be carried out by three research institutions involved in cooperation with the producers.
The work package 4 represents the correct continuation of previous activities, by conducting several oenological tests in cooperation with IRVOS, Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs of Malta and of Agriculture and Maltese Producers Organization. These studies aim to define winemaking procedures able to improve the quality of products and guarantee the profitability of the system. The activities will be made both at the IRVOS’s experimental winery in Marsala and at private wineries.
The work package 5 includes transfer of technical knowledge from Sicily to Malta and the opening of an experimental station in Malta. It aims to start a process of skill improving refering both to vineyard planting and winemaking systems, in order to pursue by themselves applied research and experimentation beyond the end of the project.
The work package 6 includes of information and communication activities. It involves all partners to inform people about land defense and to identify new instruments for the promotion of the territories.

Expected Results:

  • Studies on the territories of Malta, Gozo, Pantelleria and Linosa
  • Definition of a Territorial Information System able to localize the areas suffering of erosive
    risks and abandonment, where planting grape varieties
  • Definition of the best modalities to plant and manage the native Maltese grape varieties and draw up of a manual for the vine management
  • Identification of international grape varieties able to grow in the Maltese territory
  • Definition of the best modalities to plant and manage the Zibibbo grape variety in the islands of Gozo, Pantelleria and Linosa
  • Definition of oenological protocols able to obtain high value-added products derived from
    Maltese native and international grape varieties
  • Definition of oenological protocols able to obtain high added value-added products derived
    from Zibibbo grape variety
  • Improvement ot the technical skills of the Maltese partners
